Why Mathmo.me?

You may be wondering why my site is called Mathmo.me?

At Cambridge University students studying mathematics are called “mathmos”! A number of years ago I taught a student who didn’t find maths that easy  but who seemed quite excited by the word and the concept. I saw her go on to work really hard to achieve an A* at GCSE – she achieved at a level that exceeded her expectations of herself even though I had confidence in what she could do. That was a great delight to watch.

I therefore think of this site as asking a question: “Mathmo? Me?”

With proper support and encouragement all students can improve their level of achievement in and their enjoyment of maths. I therefore hope that this site might help you with those two objectives.

While you might not go on to study mathematics at Cambridge (although I hope that some of you will), I hope that your ambition and expectation of what you can achieve will increase and that you will view yourself a little more as a Mathmo!
